Fall 2020 Newsletter

Hello AVP Colorado family!

We want to express our sincere thanks to our volunteer facilitators who dedicate their time, talent and energy to each Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshop.  Also, we have a huge appreciation for the time Hope and Maire have put into planning the execution of our online workshops!

We are also grateful for everyone who has participated in an AVP workshop this year.  We admire the courage, insight and honesty that participants offer – shining a light on the good that is in each of us. This continues to be especially true as we present our workshops online via Zoom to our community.  During this time that we are not able to be inside the prisons, we are grateful for the opportunities presenting to work with individuals in our communities.

Fall 2020 Highlights:

-  Since August 2020, we've hosted 6 workshops with a total of 60 participants with the help of 576 volunteer hours!
- We've hosted two volunteer training workshops, training volunteers from AVP Colorado and other AVP chapters around the world with a total of 42 participants.
- Our new volunteer social media coordinator, Haley, is creating engaging content for our social media platforms.
- Our volunteers worked on four committees to launch our online workshops.

The board members of AVP Colorado created a mission statement and racial justice statement that support our values:

AVP Colorado Mission:
The mission of AVP Colorado is to help people empower themselves to transform their lives by affirming their positive qualities, respecting themselves and others, and learning and practicing nonviolent approaches to resolve conflicts.

AVP Colorado Racial Justice Statement
The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) was established by civil rights leaders, those who faced incarceration, and members of the Religious Society of Friends.  AVP is underpinned by the understanding that every human being is intrinsically valuable and worthy.

Increasing the visibility of ongoing injustices and tragedies are leading previously unaware people in our country to recognize systemic violence. As a country, it is incumbent on us to end the systemic violence that exists in our policing, courts, and correctional institutions; as individuals, it is our responsibility to recognize and cease the violence we may perpetrate by action as well as by our inaction.

Ways to support AVP Colorado:

  • Give to our Colorado Gives Campaign (details below)

  • Serve on our Engagement Committee to create content to share with our inside facilitators during this time. Email Stephanie at stephanie@avpcolorado.org to join the committee. We still need 5 volunteers for this project.

  • Attend one of our upcoming workshops. Our next workshop is a basic workshop on December 4, 5, and 6 from 9:00-3:30 pm

  • Share your support for AVP Colorado with friends and family

Thank you for your continued support and belief in this work!
