Job Description:  

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Project Director is responsible for ensuring that AVP Colorado fulfills its mission by overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of AVP Colorado.  Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach.  The position reports to and works closely with the Project Board.

AVP Colorado offers the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) in Colorado prisons and communities.  AVP is an international volunteer program that enables participants to deal with potentially violent situations in new and creative ways.  

SUPERVISORY STATUS:  Provides supervisory oversight to paid staff and volunteers.

AVP Colorado is a project of the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center (CNDC) and all employees are CNDC employees. Areas of Responsibility

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Organization Mission and Strategy – Works with the board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.

  • Responsible for implementation of AVP Colorado’s programs that carry out AVP Colorado’s mission.  Evaluate quality and effectiveness of programs and modify as necessary to improve. 

  • Lead contact with AVP-USA, including reporting AVP workshops to AVP-USA and maintaining evaluation process.

  • Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that AVP Colorado can successfully fulfill its mission into the future.

  • Responsible for the enhancement of AVP Colorado’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic, and private organizations. 

Project Board Development and Facilitation – Works with board in order to fulfill the mission of AVP Colorado

  • Responsible for leading in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Project Board.

  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.

Financial Performance – Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenues necessary to support AVP Colorado’s mission.

  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of AVP Colorado including but not limited to:  submitting an annual proposed budget to the board, and presenting monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.

  • Responsible for the fiscal management by operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

  • Ensure proper financial documentation is maintained and CNDC’s accounting procedures are followed

Human Resources Management - Responsible for overseeing the hiring, development and supervision of staff and volunteers*

  • Supervise, project staff, volunteers, and independent contractors

  • Ensure staff comply with CNDC and project-specific personnel policies, procedures/practices

  • Provide training and development to staff and volunteers

  • Notify CNDC before handling staff-related disciplinary issues or terminations

Risk Management - Responsible for assessing and mitigating risk

  • Identify and evaluate the risks to the project

  • Work with CNDC to implement risk management policies and procedures, such as background checks, waivers and program protocol

  • Work with CNDC to ensure appropriate insurance coverage for events, property and activities

  • Assure appropriate recordkeeping, documentation, data collection and dissemination

Working with CNDC - Responsible for ensuring the project follows CNDC policies and procedures, such as the CNDC Handbook

  • Maintain open lines of communication with CNDC

  • Provide timely and complete paperwork, documentation and other necessary information, including timesheets, grant proposals and reports, and financial documentation

*CNDC is the legal employer of all project-related staff; it may be necessary for CNDC to intervene on matters including but not limited to staff complaints, layoffs, terminations, and hiring decisions.

Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Experience and skill in working with a board of directors

  • High level strategic thinking and planning

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Financial and organizational management skills

  • Ability to build strong relationships with donors volunteers, organizational partners, and community

  • Demonstrated fundraising skills.

  • Have a passion for the mission of AVP Colorado and an entrepreneurial spirit for finding resources and support in the community

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree and three of more years of nonprofit management experience

Compensation/Benefits

This position is a paid part time position. The position is 20 hours per month.  Salary begins at $22/hour and may be higher based on experience.  This position is not eligible for benefits.
